Description
The MMSR 4 Knob 3 Band has been designed with characteristics very similar to the original MM Stingray 2 Band EQ, in order to retain the same interaction between the MM pickup and the electronics, crucial in creating the original pre EB sound colours. Our circuit additionally has separate stages for the bass and treble, allowing us to further enhance and extend the bass control. A Mid Sweep, is included along with original MM style Bass and Treble. When the Mid boost/cut is centred, its effect is neutral and the EQ is purely late 70s MM style.
Control Knobs & functions:
Single Knob – VOLUME
Single Knob – Late 70s MM style TREBLE
Stack Knob – MID / MID FREQUENCY SWEEP (Mid Sweep 01)
Single Knob – Late 70s MM style with enhanced BASS
This unit is supplied fully wired with 3 single and 1 stacked pot including knobs, Switchcraft jack plus battery clip, which may be spliced into an existing battery box, as would be available in most MM style basses. There are screw terminals for the pickup connections for easy installation and a ground wire is provided to connect the bridge and any other grounding points/screening. Out of the box, just connect the pickup, snap on a battery, plug into a rig and you have sound, but remember that the grounding connections are crucial in attaining a solid installation.
The MMSR 3 Band can be supplied with or without a plate, but our plates will fit only SUBs and OLP basses. It will be necessary to use the existing plate on a standard MM bass.
NOTE: The MMSR 4 Knob 3 Band without plate, is suitable for the MM Sabre too, the later type where the jack is on the side of the bass. Connection for a bright toggle are included.
What They Say
“Dear John,
I am writing to thank you for the excellent MMSR preamp you made for me. My Stingray was my main bass for ten years until I purchased a Sadowsky Jazz in 2008. The Stingray just couldn’t compete with the powerful, plug-in-and-go tone and flexibility of the Sadowsky. It irritated me that my ‘first choice’ Stingray had become pretty redundant.
I discovered the MMSR on your website about 18 months ago but was hesitant—it wasn’t certain it would solve my problem, and I didn’t want to change the appearance of the bass with a stacked mid control or lose that classic Stingray sound.
When the MMSR arrived, I was immediately impressed by its appearance. The installation was very straightforward—the near solder-less setup is genius.
After plugging in the upgraded bass, I was truly stunned by the result. My Stingray still sounded like a Stingray, but with greater clarity and less hiss. The bass and treble controls intuitively shape the tone without muddying the sound.
I’m also totally sold on the stacked mid control. I’d compare its role to the pickup blend on the Sadowsky Jazz. Now I have two basses of fundamentally different character, but equal flexibility and extremely high quality.
So—many thanks indeed!”

“Hi John,
I used the bass on Thursday night and it sounded great. The bottom end was far more solid and powerful, and the top end had some sizzle it never had before.
The mids are the icing on the cake—they make the bass far more flexible than it was before. A success, I’d say 🙂
Thank you so much. I’m much happier with this bass now. Speak soon.”

“Hello John,
I received the MMSR preamp yesterday and installed it right away. It lives up to its reputation.
I’ve never owned a pre-Ernie Ball MM bass, but I’m familiar with the sound—and your preamp gets me closer to it. The rest is down to the strings and amp.
The stock preamp always seemed to emphasize fret noise unless I rolled off all the treble. Yours offers many more usable tones, even without using the sweeping mid.
Thank you very much, John. I’ll be playing this bass more often now!”
