Details

The U-RETRO 01, based on the J-RETRO 01, is a universal highly flexible on-board dual input preamp and EQ system. Its high quality circuit uses three stacked knobs and includes an active blend circuit plus a 3 band equaliser with bass, variable frequency mid, treble and bright function. The active blend circuit prevents the loss associated with many passive basses where, when both pickups are up full, the signal cross-feeds from one pickup into the other and vice versa. However, a switch is included to allow a passive equal mix of both pickups as this can give a subtle difference in sound. A second switch allows some basic passive modes with useful settings too.

Each pickup input has its own individual input amplifier, along with its gain trim adjustment preset. This allows for pickups of different types and output levels to be readily matched without compromise.

The pots have 10.0mm threaded bushes designed for rear cavity mounting in the bass. Flat wire connections to the pots and toggle switches allow for flexible layout.

The preamp comes fully wired including battery clip and Switchcraft jack. For ease of installation, pickups are connected via screw terminals.  A ground wire will need to be connected to grounding points such as the bridge and any internal screening.

Out of the box, just connect the pickups using the screw terminals. snap on a battery, and you'll get sound.

HARDWARE OPTIONS: Chrome, Black or Gold. (Can be mixed by special request)

What they say!

*  Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know my impression of the U-Retro. I finally managed to get fitted to a bass of mine - superb! It's transformed the range of sounds from the Dingwall pickups (it's in a Frankenstein-ish Lakland/Thunderbird bass I've been modding/having modded for a while now) while keeping their basic sounds and character - very clever indeed! Am now seriously contemplating drilling holes in my beloved Dingwall ABZ4 to fit a U-Retro in there, and that's saying something! I'm positively evangelical about this preamp!  Mark - UK

*  I have to say I’m absolutely delighted with the system as, without having to modify the bass at all, it has given me a level of control that was just not available to me before in my Aria SB1000 – I use the bass in an 80s tribute band (so the visuals are important) and we play everything from bass heavy electro (Human League/Tubeway Army etc) through to funk pop (Level 42/Kajagoogoo etc) and the bass covers it all with the range of tonal manipulation I now have – it’s just great and so easy just having to take the one bass to the gig knowing that I’ve got the whole setlist covered. Thanks again John for all your help and in building me such a versatile and great sounding pre-amp. Best Regards.  Dave - UK

*  Hi John, it is ok your U RETRO goes (just) in the STATUS cavity. I have many bass in my life but the STATUS + U RETRO + pickups CREL is the better sound i never ear before, power versatil clear harmonics it sound great !!!!! I use just a little the boost bass because it goes too much low (i use serie pickups) Many many thanks for the pleasure i have to play with your preamp.  Alain - France
